Apple iPhone 4g Revealed

The Next iPhone?

It has been confirmed that the new iPhone, to be released summer of 2010, was found on the floor of a bar in the Bay Area of California. Gray Powell, a North Carolina State University 2006 graduate and software engineer for Apple, unfortunately for himself and Apple, lost the phone. One has to think that it is very well possible that his career could be in jeopardy over this ordeal. Details about the design of the new iPhone have been extremely secure up until now. On the other hand, it is possible that the publicity of the whole issue, including the leak of the Apple employee’s name, may end up playing a part in saving his job. At this point, if he is fired by Apple, it could look bad on Apple’s part, as it would surely be made public. But that is just speculation.

Here is a short video from Jason Chen @Gizmodo:

Eventually the phone ended up in the hands of the guys over at Gizmodo.com, who then proceeded to take it apart for inspection and validation purposes. It has since been confirmed that it is, in fact, the new iPhone 4G. And to re-confirm that it’s the real deal, Apple has confirmed that they are, indeed, missing a prototype iPhone. Gizmodo has stated that, unlike the 3GS currently on the market, the new iPhone has a front-facing video chat camera. It also has an improved back-camera with a larger lens and flash. The screen has an improved display with a higher resolution as well. At the top they found what looked like a secondary microphone for noise cancellation as well as split buttons for volume, and all the buttons on it are metallic.

From Gizmodo:

While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it’s clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here’s the detailed list of our findings:

What’s new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery
